National Rankings System

The NSA Squash National Rankings is the official ranking for squash in Namibia. The ranking is to rate the performance level of Namibian resident squash players. It is also a merit-based method used for determining entry and seeding in squash tournaments. The rankings are produced monthly. The NSA National Rankings System is based on the PSA Rankings System in use since 1 January 1975, adjusted for the local playing environment, with the primary change the inclusion of the Swiss Pairing format for event, resulting in play-offs for all positions in the draw. The NSA Rankings will be kept on record on an ongoing basis as from the 1 January 2022 rankings.
Players competing in NSA tournaments earn ranking points according to how far they get in the draw. The points available depend on the event rating as per the NSA Tournaments and the draw size. The monthly rankings (issued on the 1st of the month) are used in selecting entries to tournaments and in determining the seeds.
The total number of points a player earns in the previous twelve months (1) is divided by the number of tournaments played (a minimum divisor of six is used) to give a ranking average. Where a player has played more than six tournaments the best scores may be selected (i.e. the lowest are not included) according to the Averaging Formula. (See table below.) For example, a player who has competed in 12 events will have his best 9 scores used. These will be accumulated and divided by 9.
Events will be provided a rating by the NSA Committee. The type of event as well as the size of the event will be taken into consideration. Should the number of entrants for an event be very low, the NSA rankings team may downgrade an event to a lower rating. Tournaments will be ranked Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze. In general, Platinum Tournaments will include the Namibian Open, the Namibian Closed/Nationals, the Top 16 (Men) and Top 8 (Ladies) events. Open events hosted by clubs will typically be graded Gold. The points tables will be published on the NSA website. Points will vary depending on the draw size. For Events with more than one section, the sections will be combined, with lower sections following higher sections in the points table for the results of the event. The winner and runner up of a lower section will get 10% bonus points for reaching the respective positions in their sections. Points Summary Table provided on page 2 of this document.
Each Club affiliated to NSA will be allowed to have one Club Closed Event per year that qualify towards the NSA Rankings. This will typically be the Club’s internal Club Championships on Club Closed Tournament. These events cannot have a rating higher than Silver, regardless of the participants or the size of the draw.
Ladies participating in the men’s draw will be placed at the top of the ladies results for the event in the order of finishing in the men’s section. The ladies section(s) will follow in order thereafter to establish the ladies results and related points specific to the event.

Averaging Formula
A divisor is selected based on the number of tournaments played during the rankings calculation term as shown in the table below (the minimum divisor is 4). The average is calculated from the highest points scored for this number of events over the past rankings term, as per the divisor table below. Where the number of tournaments is more than the applicable divisor, the lowest event points will be dropped, i.e. for 7 tournaments played, the lowest points will fall away and only the top 6 scores will count.

- Due to Covid restrictions the number of events in 2020 and 2021 was limited, hence the rankings term was adjusted to 24 months. On 1 March 2022 the first four months of 2020 will be dropped from the rankings, followed be 2 months at the beginning of every following month. By the end of 2022, the system will be based on a 12 month cycle as per design.
